Rather disappointed that “The Wind in the Willows” wasn’t nominated. Otherwise, a stellar list.
Shoot…by the time I got to the end of the list, I forgot about adding my email in the ‘other’ box. May I still please be entered?

Such wonderful books! I put a book name in the “other” category… me = overwhelmed by all the book-y beauty.

J. Frost and the Night Huntress Novels ftw ❤
It is extremely hard to pick my favorite. Too many great books on this list. Favorite author would be easier.
OMG – I think that was one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make.

Ohhhh not so fair…. when I nominated so many of these I never thought I would have to chose…. picked a couple but left others off …. soooooo sooooo hard…. thanks for the fun though….

Wow! This is hard to pick!!!
How can anyone pick just one ?? I need to read some of these.
Dang a lot mentioned… though I didn’t see any of Jennifer Roberson’s Cheysuli books (awesome series!), Del and Tiger series, or Karavan
Then I like RA Salvatore, Ed Greenwood, Elaine Cunningham, Jane Lindskold
OH yeah email!
liyanaland@gmail.com
I voted!!
SOO Many to choose from!
Go Sherri Go!
count me in i would love to win the #1 book
Yeah, this was tough. So many ones that I read! So many that I want to be #1!
Great book lists…too many to chose from
Love Sherrilyn Kenyon & Suzanne Collins
the list is full of fantastic authors
Oh so not fair. WAY TOO MANY of my favorites up there. I thought it was for the year and was going to vote for Sherrilyn Kenyon.
All time I had to vote for Marion Bradley Zimmerman ” Mists of Avalon”
Grrrr how many votes are we allowed?
More than one. Though I would suggest not going too over board; it wouldn’t be great if there were several ties for #1. I think a max of 3 maybe? Something like that.
Great list of books! Would love to print the list and read!
This is an impressive list of books! I really want to win the #1!
I love J. Frost and her Night Huntress series!!
brit17@carolina.rr.com
Hard to choose from so many great books, but I voted!
Wow, so many books…hard to choose. I love about 75% of these lol. The rest I haven’t read yet!
Great list! Too many wonderful choices!
I voted Acheron… I do love that book! I read it all the time!
Great List
Wow, theres so many books. hmmm, Brent Weeks has to be top 1. No doubt about it. 😀
The name Orson Scott Card was misspelled.
Just thought I should point that out.
Cheers, will edit now. Thanks!
It is just the best!
I can not believe that no one nominated anything written by Andre Norton! How could people not consider her? The Witchworld series? Hello….
Other authors in the “I can’t believe they were skipped” area – Gordon R. Dickson – the Dragon and the George: Poul Anderson Operation: Chaos, Three Hearts and Three lIons: Robert Asprin and Lynn Abbey: Theives’ World: C, J. Cherryh, Paladin: Robert Heinlein: Magic Incorporated, Glory Road: Anything by Lord Dunsany? Clark Ashton Smith? Lovecraft? Eleanor Farjeon’s Silver Curlew; and this is all off the top of my head!
It’s a shame you didn’t come by before nominations closed. They could have been included.
Oh, that was hard to choose! Too many wonderful books to choose from. Hope I win!
😀 awesome list of books.
I can’t wait to see the winners. ❤
It was hard to choose which one to vote for.
Wings for sure something about Faeries!
WOW I voted but geez, noone is above 1% this is gonna take a while………. Good luck everyone.. Authors and voters……..I’d love a new book…
[…] Shared Poll: The List […]
What a list! I missed a few. :[
I voted, and there are lots of great books on the list, but wish I had known about this sooner. Can’t see how there could be voting on best fantasy without anyone including L’Engle’s “Wrinkle in Time” or any of Andre Norton’s books!
I agree with Raonaid Luckwell comments about Tiger and Del and Jane Lindskold I did not see that we were nominating until the list was closed but
Ii am happy I got a chance to vote
George MacDonald is on the list twice, both under “MacDonald” and under “McDonald” (which is incorrect). Easy to overlook on such a huge list.
Thanks for the tip! I’ll go correct it now 🙂
Hmm… Difficult to choose. I wish the Enchanted, Inc. -series of Shanna Swendson would be on the list too, because I also really like them… Which book will I choose now?

Thats is one great list I’m going to read over it again to find some new authors, so I can fill my reading time slot.
wow, That is a LONG list.
I think I’ve voted for all the books I love, because I simply cannot choose! If I could choose , though, number 1 would be MAgic Bites, Burns and Strikes. Maybe. I don’t know…
I’ve also voted for:
Maria V. Snyder’s books
JEaniene Frost’s books
First Twilight Book
Richelle Mead’s books
Karen Marie Moning’s books
JK Rowling…
Yeah, that was pretty much it.
Is it worth noting that ‘memory’ ‘sorrow’ and ‘thorn’ aren’t the names of the Tad Williams’ books?
Thank you for letting us know. Will edit the list now.
oops. Also the Fionavar Tapestry is the name of the trilogy for Guy Gavriel Kay. The three books are listed individually as well.
Pretty interesting list. I’m perplexed by many of the nominations. People really went out of their way to nominate every book by Stephanie Meyer, but couldn’t bother to include Mieville’s Perdido Street Station? Or Richard Morgan? Or Joe Abercrombie? Or Andrej Sapkowski?
Looking forward to seeing the winner!
Thanks again for letting us know.
To be perfectly honest with you, I myself haven’t heard of most of those authors. It may be the case that it’s the same for other readers. It’s a shame you weren’t able to nominate them before nominations closed.
Jared, I was noticing the vampire lovers on the nominations thread as it was happening. Most people were submitting the few they felt that truly were the shining lights of a particular author, but with Meyer and several of the other vampiromance writers it seemed like they couldn’t decide.
I absolutely love Richard Morgan, but I’ve only read his sci fi – didn’t know he did fantasy too?
Well, I threw in my two cents on this one. Long, long list to choose from. Nice job, you guys.
Wow – what a list – had problems deciding – but eventually came up with my picks 🙂
Wow,what a list!!
Voted, can’t wait to see the outcome! Wow that was hard.
Bella and Jo you have done an absolutely brilliant job, so much time and effort, well done on all the hard work.
That was too hard. Some of the books should have been out because they were definitely sci-fi. The books in a series should have been lumped together. I mean, how could I possibly choose between the George R. R. Martin books. I would have voted for them if I could have voted for the whole series.
Hey Cara,
You could always just vote for all four of them. If this vote went viral properly, and ended up with thousands of votes, having an individual person vote even for 10-15 out of the 800+ would work fine.
My man Peter Pan has my vote, it was almost a given.
Dottie 🙂
Fantastic List! I can’t wait to see results and update my to-read list.
Wow, there are sure a lot of good books that I voted for here.
spicedice45@gmail.com
All such great books! So hard to choose!
What a huge amount of work you’ve done!
And like a typical backseat driver, I’m going to say: I was surprised that the Diana Gabaldon titles listed didn’t include the ‘original’ work, “Outlander”. Would’ve voted for that.
Outlander also goes by Cross stitch, which was on the list
Only one Glen Cook ! Horrors !
If not already suggested, then may I say if you do it again include a single entry for series rather than a list of the novels within a series.
Lots of my favourites here and lots of authors I have never read.
Please include me in the giveaway as books are always welcome.
Thanks.

That is quite a list. I voted for my favorites!
[…] your voting fingers ready! Vote for your favourite fantasy book here – nominations have closed (they got over 800) but the voting to determine the top 101 is […]
Wow, this is a great list. There are so many books on here that I read but haven’t thought about in years. I’m kind of disappointed that The Book Thief isn’t on here (that is considered fantasy, isn’t it?), and it’s kind of unnecessary to list books in a series rather than just the series name.
I was shocked to see Daggerspell and Darkspell on the list…. The plot line is great, but I always thought those books were kind of…weird.
Hm, I just realized, does Lemony Snicket’s series not count? Where’s that?
Anyway, I didn’t realize there was a sort of drawing. Would it work to put my email address here now? I doubt it. Anyway, if Harry Potter or Twilight wins (as is, unfortunately, likely), it wouldn’t really matter, cause I already have those books.
I’m not doing the drawing, Bella is. I’m not sure if email in comments will go towards it, but several people have. You could try, but it’s down to Bella.
Hey Melanie, I think you answered your own question. If you only listed the series rather than individual books, then you can’t distinguish when an author had a flash of fantastical brilliance with one particular book in the series.
I can point to a number of authors who have written an awesome first book then followed it up with weak efforts that may have even been artificially forced upon them by a publisher seeking to follow up on success.
As for Daggerspell/Darkspell – that’s definitely up to the eye of the beholder – that series is my brother’s favourite fantasy series ever. I enjoyed them enough to nominate them originally, especially knowing his love for them, thinking others probably did too.
There are so many books on the list! Please enter me for the giveaway-thanks!
Great books!

A fun thing to do.
well i did it, and it only took me about 20 minutes to do it, I hope one of the books i picked will win, they were really great. Good luck favorite authors.
My favorite was not on there either, Sherwood Smith’s Crown Duel. Thats my top!
This is a FANTASTIC list. A few people I love were left out, like Holly Black, and I didn’t have enough room in the write in section, but it’s all good.
WOW! Such a great list. It was so hard trying to choose just one. I am looking forward to see which book comes out on top.

[…] Jill Williamson Author « Check out the new MLP releases for October! By Darkness Hid Nominated September 10, 2009 How cool is this? My novel was nominated on a very long list of favorite fantasy books. Go check out this list and vote for your favorite. If you want to vote for By Darkness Hid, you’ve got to scroll way down to Williamson. https://101fantasybooks.wordpress.com/vote-for-101-fantasy/ […]
As big a fan as I am of Twilight and Harry Potter, I’d love to see a relative unknown who’s written something stirring and fresh win this voting. Go Jill Williamson!
I predict that either Tolkien or CS Lewis will win. However, there are lots of new authors on the list (like Jill Williamson) that are great too!
This is a great list 🙂 It’s hard for me to believe Breaking Dawn could come close to tying with any of Tolkien’s masterpieces. It will be interesting to see how it all turns out in the end.
Thank you for sponsoring this!
Maya M – I think (could be wrong) that Diana Gabaldon’s original “Outlander” novel is called “Cross Stich” in many countries.
101fantasybooks – Maybe edit it to say “Cross Stich/Outlander”? (Unless I’m wrong about the name, that is. :))
Thanks again, it was fun!
Are results being updated? Looks like nearly every book has 1% of the votes. I was hoping to use the list to pick my next read…
Wow! This list is so comprehensive that it’s really impossible to select the best. How can we compare some of the classics with modern works? They are like apples and oranges, even though it’s all fantasy.
Just curious why some authors’ series are listed (Donaldson’s Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever, Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia) while others have each book listed. It seems, for example, that Tolkien’s votes may be scattered among his three books in the Lord of the Rings series. Just an observation—would have been nice if they’d been handled uniformly.
[…] today. Two blogs – Ink & Paper and A Bibliophile’s Bookshelf – are hosting a fan vote for the favorite all time fantasy. Out of 800 nominated books, they compiled a list of 101 to […]
A couple of typos:
Brust – Phoenix, not Pheonix
Eddings – Diamond, not Diamons
I only just realised that the vote was on – and with only two days to go – I think you should extend it if possible and get it out there more – with a list of 800 books, you should have at least 800 people voting (just for law of averages).
Those are some awesome books, woot for By Darkness Hid!
Wow! That’s a lot of good books! What will you do if there is a tie?
